A Short History
Southern Connecticut Weather was founded in 2013 as a place for our founder, Timothy Wrightington Jr, to post his thoughts on the weather away from his general Facebook profile. Starting out with only family and friends as readers, the page quickly developed a following for its no nonsense style and emphasis on the facts and various possible solutions compared to the hype often seen from commercial weather outlets.
In December of 2013, the page welcomed Spencer Aronstein as a co-writer, allowing for an expanded breadth of analysis and higher quality forecasts as a result of two minds working together to achieve meteorological excellence. In the early parts of winter 2014, SCW gained notoriety outside its circle of followers for its strong accuracy that winter, and the page began to grow exponentially.
As a result, by the end of winter 2014, SCW had grown from a small hobbyist page to one of the most respected sources for weather in Connecticut. Throughout the process, the page has never wavered from what made it successful; quality discussion and analysis without the hype. In 2015, we added two new forecasters to the team, meteorologist Greg Petridis, and Don Bell, as part of our mission to provide you with the most accurate and reliable weather coverage in Connecticut. In 2018, SCW added Luca Di Carlo, who went on to intern with WTNH News Channel 8 and then Europe to forecast.
Today, SCW focuses on discussion-based forecasting that aims to educate and inform the public of upcoming weather events rather than produce fear and hype through predatory posting. We use models, meteorology, and experience to explain our forecasts rather than simply posting model images, and we go into a level of detail and engagement in our discussions rarely seen in commercial forecasting. As a result, our readers don't only get a good forecast, they get an education in forecasting as well, allowing them to interpret forecasts and evidence to come to their own conclusions about upcoming weather events.
We generally post a few times per week both here and on our Facebook page, increasing to daily posts ahead of significant weather events. You can also find us on Twitter @SouthernCTWX.
Meet the Staff
Timothy Wrightington Jr-Partner and Forecaster
Timothy, an avid weather hobbyist, founded the Southern Connecticut Weather Facebook page back in January 2013 after deciding to branch off weather discussion from his own personal page to friends and family. Tim is a forecaster for the page, while also making many of the graphics that are displayed as part of the forecasts. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, playing sports, and socializing with friends, among many other things. As a lifelong resident of West Haven, Connecticut, he is very keen to the very intricate microclimates of the state, especially the shoreline. Currently Timothy works as a mechanic, but has aspirations of one day going to college and receiving a meteorology degree. Feel free to contact Tim at [email protected].
Spencer Aronstein-Partner, Forecaster, and Webmaster
Spencer joined Southern Connecticut Weather in December 2013 as its lead forecaster, and since then he has overseen the growth of SCW from a small Facebook page consisting mainly of family and friends to one of the leading sources of weather information in Connecticut. He is the coordinator the major SCW operations as well as many more behind the scenes tasks. When Spencer isn't forecasting or writing, you'll probably find him outdoors, since he is an avid hiker, skier, and climber. After starting his career in Boston, MA, he now lives in Utah. He studied Computer Science and Business at Northeastern University. He can be reached at [email protected].
Don Bell-Lead Forecaster
Don joined Southern Connecticut Weather as a forecaster in November 2015, and is currently SCW's Lead Forecaster. Don has been passionate about weather since childhood, and has written both informal and formal forecasts since 2012. Since 2017, Don has chased and documented major weather events across the nation and Canada, including Hurricane Idalia, Hurricane Fiona, Hurricane Laura, Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Dorian (NC), Tropical Storm Isaias, Severe Weather in the Midwest, and Major Lake Effect Snow events in Upstate New York. These chases require exceptional planning and intensive forecasting up to ten days in advance, and make Don a better hobbyist forecaster. Don brings enthusiasm, analytical skill, and reader-friendly detail to his forecasts. Don was born and raised in East Hartford, Connecticut. When he isn’t working or thinking about the weather, he is likely doing something sports related or spending time with family. He can be reached at [email protected], but followers know Facebook is really the place to reach out.
Meteorologist Greg Petridis-Senior Forecaster
Greg Petridis is a professional meteorologist with forecasting experience that goes back to his days in college in the early 2000s. A 2006 graduate of Kean University with a Bachelors of Science in Meteorology, Greg is constantly researching the topic and constantly discovering new ideas in the subject. These help to make him a better forecaster. Greg resides in Elizabeth, NJ, where he works in secondary education and provides private forecasting services in addition to his work with SCW. Greg began working with SCW in 2014 as a freelance writer, and joined the team full-time as a forecaster in September 2015. He can be reached at [email protected].
