1/4/2018 Blizzard: Live Updates

1/4/2018

Comments

Good morning from Southern Connecticut Weather.

Snow has broken out across Connecticut and Blizzard Warnings have been issued for New London, Middlesex, and New Haven Counties. Even though you are not currently in the warning Fairfield County, folks along the coast should expect blizzard like conditions as well. The rest of the state remains under winter storm warnings. Here is our current snow forecast and the radar.

An exceptional storm is undergoing bombogenesis, or rapid intensification, to our south. In fact, this storm is deepening at a rate rarely seen. It was 1011mb yesterday and it is 964 right now! This intense storm is bringing hurricane force wind gusts to the coast of NC (not expected here) and thundersnow along the east coast. As we've mentioned in the last few posts, the setup looks increasingly favorable for a major to severe event across the state, with high winds at the shoreline and the potential for heavy banding over the course of the day in CT. As always and especially with this storm, we have to watch where the banding and dry slots set themselves up.

Our forecast map remains on track but I think I'd be remiss if I didn't say that higher totals are possible if we get banding set up and stay over an area for an extended period of time. Driving will be very hazardous. I would stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Let the plow operators do their jobs. Snow will continue to increase in intensity and will end late tonight. Shoreline residents and areas that frequently lose power should be prepared for power outages and minor to moderate coastal flooding. We will continue to provide updates over the course of the day on our Facebook and Twitter pages, so like or follow us there to stay informed. Enjoy the snow! -DB & SA
