The week ahead looks active, with two storm systems to contend with. Both currently look far more wet than white.
Monday
The last day of 2018 continues our streak of extraordinarily wet conditions. The year 2018 has seen more rainy days than any year since the 1970s, which is even more extraordinary considering that during the summer we had extended dry periods.
Tomorrow during daylight hours looks great, with sunshine and increasing clouds. As we head into the evening however, another storm cuts well to our west, bringing rain that will be heavy at times during the nighttime and early morning hours.
It's not going to be great if you're out and about to celebrate the New Year.
The storm clears during the morning hours on Tuesday, and we return to seasonable cool and dry conditions, with highs in the 30s for most.
Thursday/Friday
The end of the week likely brings another storm, but it's still a touch unclear what that will entail. After a brief period showing more snow than rain, the American guidance has come back to Earth, bringing rain into the state as early as Thursday. The European model, which has led the way thus far, cuts the storm to our west again, bringing more rain on Friday after a brief period of insignificant wintry precipitation.
Things are still a bit uncertain here, but I lean toward this being a wet event, with rain and no significant wintry precipitation. We'll see what happens.
Below is the GFS depiction for later this week. Honestly, it's barely passing the laugh test right now with the Thursday/Friday potential given how jumpy it has been, but I'm posting because it shows one scenario as well as the colder air filtering in next weekend.
The first weekend of 2019 looks beautiful, with colder conditions filtering into the state and a chance of some snow showers in the wake of the low and perhaps a weak clipper that passes through northern New England. Doesn't look like anything significant.
Overall, things continue to look boring for winter lovers, although the pattern is changing a bit and becoming less putrid. Nothing significant in terms of wintry precipitation looks to be on the immediate horizon.
