Forecasters Discussion 4/14/16

Good evening from Southern Connecticut Weather!

This is going to be a short forecast. The best weather week of the year is upon us!

After a cool and unsettled period that has dominated April, we are finally breaking into a nicer pattern that is more spring like. This unusually long period of clear weather is coming as a result of being on the right side of an omega block, which essentially is a ridge of high pressure that is surrounded by an area of low pressure to its west and east.

This results in a sort of “clog” in the pattern, allowing places under high pressure to enjoy days of marvelous weather, with the unfortunate souls under low pressure to see dreary days until the flow improves. This excellent image from Weatherbell Analytics and Capital Weather Gang is the best illustration of the omega block, which has its name because of its similarity to the omega symbol.

Above you will see the entire GFS ensemble projection of temperature anomaly for the continental US. You will see above normal temperatures at the surface far beyond our forecast period, potentially heralding a more spring like and above normal regime as we close out the month.
I always worry about backdoor cold fronts this time of year, but in this case, I am optimistic that we will remain clear. The only question is Monday, but I am going with a nice day right now.

This time of year, in the Hartford area the average high temperature is 57 with a low of 36. In Bridgeport, the average high temperature in mid April is 55 with lows around 38. Over the next few days we will see highs above to well above normal, with temperatures warmest inland! Get out there and enjoy it!

The dailies:
Friday: Sunny with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Saturday:
Sunny with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Sunday:
Sunny with highs in the mid to upper 60s.

Monday:
Sunny with highs in the low to mid 70s. Chance of showers during the overnight hours. Chance of rain 20%.

Tuesday:
Sunny with highs in the low to mid 60s.

Wednesday:
Sunny with highs in the mid to upper 50s.

Thursday:
Sunny with highs in the low to mid 70s.

Thank you again for reading! Enjoy being on the right side of the omega block!
