Forecaster's Discussion--7/9/17

Good morning from Southern Connecticut Weather!

After the holiday weekend (and my birthday) I’m back at it this Sunday! Unfortunately, if you’re hoping for excitement, this forecast will have none of it. Although I like this time of year—long days, warm nights, evening thunderstorms—this can also be one of the most boring times of the year. I guess boring can be good too.

Sunday
Today is a beautiful day. Maybe even the pick of the week. High pressure sits to our southwest, and with it, we see a nice “cool” westerly flow. The result? Dry air and seasonable conditions. Get out to the beach or one of Connecticut’s beautiful state parks because today looks great.

You know how I feel about GOES-16 imagery. I love it!

Monday
Tomorrow starts out well enough. I expect mostly sunny conditions and continued dry weather for most of the day. Humidity should be held in check as well. As the evening approaches, we start to watch a cold front approaching from the northwest. That’ll spark the chances for late showers or thunderstorms, but I’m thinking any coverage will be very limited. Overall, tomorrow is great too.

Tuesday
By Tuesday we’re really taking a close look at the approaching cold front. Whereas Monday looks to remain quiet as we sit between the front and high pressure, Tuesday the front gets closer and we should have late day activity. I expect a more humid day, and for some of the thunderstorms to be on the stronger end, maybe with an isolated severe storm. It’s something to watch—especially for central and western Connecticut.

3k NAM at the end of range, so take with a grain of salt, but the ingredients are there for an active evening across part of Connecticut on Tuesday.
Wednesday
On Wednesday, the front bounces around. It looks like it pushes south of the state, which should give us improved conditions. I expect partly sunny conditions but the day could be surprisingly warm as the front returns as a warm front. We’ll see.

Either way, the front looks like it may hang around, adding uncertainty in this part of the forecast. There could be showers that hang around, especially in southern areas, or a sneaky warm day. Hedging cooler for now.

Thursday/Friday
Things get a bit more tricky for the end of the week, as the guidance shows a series of weak shortwaves that may approach the region. The result will probably be the chance of showers on Thursday, Friday, or both days, but nothing screams washout at this point. Later forecasts will be able to hone in on this part of the forecast.

Saturday
The first look at the weekend is a good one. It looks to me as if any unsettled weather at the end of the workweek is gone by the weekend. High pressure may nose in again, bringing quiet and seasonably warm conditions. Let’s hope that holds!
