An unseasonably warm week is on tap as a highly anomalous ridge continues to persist over the area, resulting in record-setting temperatures and a train of storms that will bring several rounds of rain to the state over the course of the week and leading into next weekend.
The first of several systems is currently tracking to our west through the Great Lakes, and will, as it moves north, place us in it’s warm sector, and bring a round of moderate to heavy rain to the state starting tomorrow morning and continuing into the evening hours. Expect rain to break out across the state from west to east over the course of the morning commute, with most areas seeing rain by 9-10 AM. Rain persists through much of the day before tapering off west to east in the late afternoon hours, with most of the rain gone from the state by 5-7 PM. Total rainfall will range from a quarter to a half of an inch, with the higher amounts in the NW corner of the state. High temperatures for tomorrow look to be in the low to mid 50s, around 15 degrees above normal.

Wednesday looks no nicer as another storm moves to our southwest and we rinse and repeat, with more rain and warmth expected. Rain looks to hold off until the afternoon to evening hours this time, so your morning commute and errands look to be rain-free, but don’t forget that umbrella because you’ll want it for the trip back home! Rain this time will total around ½-1”, with the heaviest amounts being again in the NW corner of the state. Highs will be fifteen to twenty degrees above normal in the mid to upper 50s.
Rain moves out Thursday morning, leaving us with some scattered showers and cloudy skies, but temps will soar to their warmest levels yet as a warm front punches through the state clear up into central New England. The result is temperatures approaching or even exceeding the seventy degree mark, thirty to thirty five degrees above normal for the time of year. In the more than two years that I’ve been writing for SCW, I don’t think I’ve ever forecast a departure that high, but there it is for your enjoyment or disgust, depending on your view of wintry weather. Mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers linger throughout the day on Thursday, although there will likely be some windows to get outside throughout the day as showers will be scattered and short-lived. I wouldn’t rule out a thunderstorm as the warm air will combine with instability to produce some chances, but don’t think any severe weather is in the cards.

As Santa makes his rounds in shorts, a T-shirt, and flip flops, somewhat cooler air will be filtering into the state from a cold front, but given the weak strength of the front and the obscene airmass that will be in place, this will serve to knock temps down only to well above normal levels as opposed to the off the charts levels that we’ll see on Thursday. Christmas day will be mostly sunny, with highs in the 50s, lending to a very un-holiday like feel in the air. Slightly cooler air returns for Saturday as another system passes to the north and brings yet another round of rain to the state overnight Saturday into Sunday. Highs for both days look to be in the upper 40s.
Looking ahead into the long range, a previously mentioned possible snow event for early next week has trended towards yet another cutter to our west, which will likely bring another round of rain and warm temps to the state early next week(Although that is still 8 days away and of course subject to change. We’ll keep you posted). Warmth looks to close out 2015, but as we open 2016, some signs are still signaling a return to more seasonable, if still above normal, weather.
