Good evening from Southern Connecticut Weather!

What a difference 24 hours makes! Many in the southern part of the state around this time were busy shoveling for what it seems the millionth time this winter. While many north of I84 and Hartford were left scratching their collective heads saying "what storm?". Generally areas near the shoreline picked up between 4 and 7 inches of snow, compared to an inch or 2 in the aforementioned areas. What everyone did get to experience was the cold temperatures ushered in behind the disturbance. Many places did not reach 30 degrees today with ares inland not even reaching the low 20s. The sun was shining though, so we take the good with the bad. March sun angle contributed by the melting of some snow despite temperatures by and large being below freezing.

As we head through the evening, clear skies will remain in place  and temperatures will plummet through the teens into the single digits inland, while southern locations down to the shoreline will experience temperatures in the mid teens. For your Saturday, temperatures will be slightly warmer than today getting into the 30s for the most part statewide. Clouds look to increase for Saturday night where there looks to be a slight chance of snow showers. Yes I mentioned the "S" word, but this look to be very minor and short lived, no accumulation expected. With cloudy skies, nighttime temperatures look to be in the low to mid 20s inland, to upper 20s and low 30s at the shore. So not nearly as cold as it has been. For Sunday we return to fair conditions with high temperatures getting as high as about 40 degrees, almost shorts weather considering what we have had to endure since late January. For Sunday night, again, skies remain mostly clear with temperatures by and large in the 20s.

Now I'm sure by now you have realized what kind of pattern we are getting into. Starting this weekend we will be spared from the grips of the Arctic,  while not having to endure major amounts of precipitation. That trend continues through next week, mostly sunny skies and seasonable temperatures look to rule the day. "Seasonable" being the key word in a winter season that has been anything but. Monday and Tuesday will feature temperatures in the mid to upper 30s statewide, with lows only dipping back as low as the 20s. Don't look now, but 50s could return to the state by Wednesday afternoon with mid 40 degree temperatures still with us on Thursday. As far as any precipitation goes, there is a chance we could get clipped by some rain or snow showers later Tuesday night into Wednesday, but even that looks very minor.

Looking even further ahead into next week/weekend, I'm sorry to say, but it looks as if colder air returns later Thursday and Friday. This "cold snap" ,if you will, does not look to be nearly as powerful as the Arctic air intrusions that have plagued the state for what seems like the entire winter, but it still looks as if temperatures will be between 5 and 10 degrees below average from late Thursday through next weekend. High temperatures look to be back into the upper 20s and low 30s by Friday with the cooler temps spilling into next weekend, where we are watching what could be our next weather maker after a fairly tranquil week on the storm front. The March 14th and 15th time period has our attention as it could produce our next noteworthy weather maker, not speculating yet as to what type of precipitation will fall or making any snowfall forecast, as it is 9 days away, but just know it is still winter and this will be tracking into a moderately cold air mass.

In the longer range, for those hoping this upcoming week of tranquil weather and warmer temperatures was setting the stage for spring to make its much awaited debut, well, keep hoping. Looking at many different long range ensembles, cold air looks to make a return to our part of the country, stay here for latter part of the month. Not only does it look as if cold air will be in place, but it looks as if there will be a few storm chances in that period as well.  As of right now, it looks like we are a long way away from being done with cold temperatures and wintry precipitation, in fact, I wouldn't rule out one or two more major coastal winter storms before all is said and done.
