Forecasters Discussion for 5/31/2015

5/31/2015

A long overdue good evening to you from Southern Connecticut Weather!

We were on track for a near record dry May across most of the state, but it's never over until it's over, and today brought abundant rain to most of the state, with some reports of over an inch of rain down, especially in the southwest and northeast corners of the state which got under rainfall rates of two to three inches per hour for a short time(In case you were wondering, that would be twenty to thirty inches of snow per hour during the winter ;) ). While our long-term precipitation deficit is not erased from today alone, it certainly put a dent in it, and the next few days should contribute as well before a return to cooler and drier weather to end the week. Let's jump into the extended forecast.

Tomorrow will bring much cooler temps than we've been seeing recently as the front that's partially responsible for the convection that brought todays heavy rains drags south of the region and brings us into the cool sector on it's northern side. As a result, we'll see a significant swing in temperatures compared to what we've been seeing the last couple of days, with highs not expected to get out of the mid 50s in most areas, with perhaps some readings approaching 60 in far southern areas. This will be accompanied by numerous showers which should bring a widespread soaking to most of the state, with some areas again likely seeing over an inch of rain.

Showers will continue through Monday night before tapering off Tuesday morning, leaving us with mostly cloudy skies clearing to some late afternoon sunshine and slightly warmer temps, with highs in the mid 60s expected. Sunshine returns for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday bringing back warmer but still seasonable temperatures in the low to mid 70s, before another chance of rain approaches by next weekend. That's a long ways out though, so stay tuned for updates during the week!

Finally, I'd like to apologize for the lack of updates the last couple of weeks. Tim has temporarily stepped away from SCW to deal with matters in his personal life and Greg and I have both been very busy as well, leading to a lack of staff to forecast for our outlets. As much as we wish that we could work on SCW full time, all three of us have full time commitments besides this site and although we try to avoid it, it sometimes leads to a crunch that results in no one being to devote time to SCW.

Unfortunately, it looks to get worse before it gets better, as I will be out of the state from mid-June until mid-August, and will not have reliable access to the internet to post discussions and updates. We are hoping that Tim will be in a position to return to us by that time to carry SCW through the summer months, but are exploring other backup plans as well, which may include hiring additional staff or partnering with another outlet to cover our website and social media during the slower summer season. Whatever that may be, we will keep you abreast of the news as it develops, and you can be assured that we will make our decisions with your best interests at heart. We expect to be back to normal coverage well before the start of the busy winter season.

As always, thank you for reading Southern Connecticut Weather. We would not be where we are today without you.
-Spencer
