Forecasters Discussion for 8/15/2016

8/15/2016

Comments

Good afternoon from Southern Connecticut Weather!

While it’s still warm and humid out, the good news is that this past weeks heatwave is in the rearview mirror, and we’ll have more seasonable(although still above normal) conditions throughout the week. It will still be active, however, with a threat for severe thunderstorms tomorrow and Wednesday.

Tuesday

A strong area of low pressure will pass to our north, bringing heavy rains to northern New England and the Canadian border. While we may see some initial showers from this system, especially in the northern and western portions of the state, the more interesting factor of tomorrow is another chance for severe thunderstorms as a warm front lifts north of us. The best chance for severe thunderstorms will be in the far western portion of the state, where a slight risk has been issued, but the entire state could see storms tomorrow. High instability and shear values will enhance the tornado risk in any storms that do develop. Two rounds of storms are expected; one in the morning hours, and one in the late afternoon into the evening. We’ll be watching the radar and will update on Facebook and Twitter as storms develop and warnings are issued.

Temperatures for tomorrow, while not quite as hot as the past few days, will be above normal, with highs in the mid to upper 80s across the state. Here’s a look at the initial low passing to our north(GFS) and the possible convection(hi-res NAM)
Wednesday

Mostly cloudy skies are expected for much of the day as Tuesday’s system exits stage right, although we could see some breaks of sunshine later in the day. Otherwise, temps will be similar to Tuesday.

Thursday-Saturday

High pressure builds in and leads to sunny skies across the state, with temps generally in the mid 80s across the state. Combined with lower humidity, it’s going to feel pretty nice out there!

Sunday-Monday

Our next system approaches the region in this timeframe; models are all over the place on timing and placement, but it appears that a system will first cut west of us before sliding east. Almost like a winter-like “cutter”. We’ll keep an eye on this one as we move through the week, for now, have just included a chance of showers in the forecast.
The Dailies
Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, some could be severe. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with highs in the mid to upper 80s. Chance of precipitation is 60%
Wednesday: mostly cloudy, with highs in the mid to upper 80s.
Thursday: Mostly sunny, with highs in the mid 80s.
Friday: Mostly sunny, with highs in the mid 80s.
Saturday: Mostly sunny, with highs in the mid 80s.
Sunday: A chance of rain, otherwise, partly sunny, with temps in the mid 80s. Chance of rain is 30%

Have a great evening and thanks for reading SCW!
