Revised Snowmap and Short Term Discussion for 2/14-25/2015 Storm

2/14/2015

Good afternoon to you from Southern Connecticut Weather!

Radar shows the state under snows of varying intensities, with generally the heaviest snow being found along the coastline and then in far eastern areas, although there are pockets of moderate to heavy snow elsewhere as well. Expect this snow to gradually intensify through the afternoon, before beginning to shift NE after around 6-7 PM or so.

That brings us to the second part of the storm, and the much bigger wildcard, that is, the inverted trough portion. Models are in good agreement on an inverted trough forming towards the SW corner of the state into the NYC metro, however, it is unclear at this point how far NE it will be able to come and as a result how much of any of the state will be impacted. As a result, we have not factored a significant impact from it into the snow totals, but if a solution such as the one shown on the hourly short range HRRR below were to verify, we'd see impacts from that IVT in the SW corner of the state, and as a result snow totals would be towards the upper end or even a bit above the 3-6" we have forecast for there. Something to keep in mind as we head into tonight.

The final part of the storm is the CCB that forms tomorrow morning as the storm deepens and intensifies in the gulf of Maine. Currently, I'm thinking this will be too far east for anyone except eastern areas to see heavy or even steady snow from it, and as a result I have downgraded the western two thirds of the state to three to six inches of snow accumulation expected, with locally up to eight inches in the SW corner of the state as they will be closest to the IVT. In the eastern third, I have downgraded totals to four to eight inches of snow accumulation as a result of only getting into the edges of the CCB instead of the heaviest portion of it.

Snow should taper off over the course of tomorrow morning and by mid-morning should be just about done, but STRONG winds continue over the course of the day creating blowing and drifting of snow as well as "ground blizzards" which can cause near whiteout conditions. If you'll be traveling tomorrow, be aware of that and plan accordingly! The winds will also combine with very cold temps to produce double digit negative wind chills across most of the state, so make sure to cover all skin when heading out to shovel and take frequent breaks inside!

We'll be updating throughout the event, and as always, appreciate your reports and observations. Thank you for reading Southern Connecticut Weather!
