At this hour, we have a combination of winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories in Connecticut in advance of a fast moving winter storm that will impact the state tomorrow. There is still a fair amount of uncertainty on how deep the heaviest banding gets into CT, but right now we're expecting a moderate impact system overall with a window for high impacts on the roads tomorrow afternoon. Let's jump right in.
At this hour, we have a combination of winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories in Connecticut in advance of a fast moving winter storm that will impact the state tomorrow. There is still a fair amount of uncertainty on how deep the heaviest banding gets into CT, but right now we're expecting a moderate impact system overall with a window for high impacts on the roads tomorrow afternoon. Let's jump right in.
Snow Accumulation
We are changing out map to outline the zones where we have higher confidence in heavy banding. As it stands, we think we see the heaviest banding remain just to the SE of CT, meaning less snow for most of the state. However, we do expect a period of moderate to heavy snow during the day, and as you know, banding is always tricky. Expect the largest totals in SE CT and the lightest the further NW you go. We do not expect mixing with this one and we expect a more fluffy as opposed to heavy and wet snow.
Timing
Expect snow to begin from SW to NE between 9-11am. It will quickly become moderate to heavy throughout the state, so expect road conditions to deteriorate quickly. We do expect that the worst of the snow will come during the early afternoon, between 1-4pm, followed by things tapering off. By the 6:30pm kickoff, most of the snow should be over for the central and western portions of the state. Monday looks fine.
Road Conditions
This is where we think the highest impact will be felt. During the heaviest snowfall of the day snowfall rates could be 1-2 inches an hour. That will make travel hazardous. Expect road conditions to deteriorate by late morning with the worst of the storm for the roads between 1-5pm. It may take time for things to clear, so be careful on the roads overnight.
Overall
This is looking like a moderate event, with some high impact on the roads. We're not expecting significant wind or power outages. This is a quick mover, and we will really need to watch the banding trends tomorrow. Our active pattern will continue with another potential event by Tuesday...
