After some snow and graupel showers today, the wind has picked up as cold air is being advected into the region.
Monday
Tonight is cold and Monday is cold, with breezy conditions and high temperatures struggling to hit freezing for most of the inland areas of the state. Things start out nice, but clouds will increase as our first storm system of the week moves toward the region. The expectation is that conditions remain dry through the evening hours, with snow developing during the hours of Tuesday morning.
Tuesday
Tuesday looks a bit messy, as low pressure develops and passes to our north. Unlike a number of our prior storms, there is enough cold air in place to allow most towns away from the shoreline to see a burst of snow during the Tuesday morning hours. However, the track of the storm will warm the mid and lower levels, and everywhere will flip to rain as Tuesday progresses.
Right now, we expect between a coating-2" for inland areas, and nothing along the shoreline. For those inland, the snow will not stick around long, as temperatures and rain do its work to melt and wash it away. Even so, there may be some delays in inland Connecticut Tuesday morning.
The first low departs late Tuesday, but there is a strong signal for another low to develop. This will again pass to our north, so the early morning hours will see rain rather than snow, but as the low departs and cold air moves in, we could see some snow showers during the later afternoon and evening hours. That will herald the arrival of our first cold snap of 2019.
The end of the week is wintry, and it starts with the cold. As the second low departs, we get a strong Arctic high settle in and it means we will have multiple days likely below freezing and lows nearing single digits. For northern New England, highs may be below zero!
Overall, there is a signal for a storm during the weekend, and a lot remains to be resolved. What we do know, however, is that with a strong and cold airmass in the region, if a low is able to pass sufficiently close it may be our best shot yet for a significant winter weather event.
Again, we're far out, so guidance will shift significantly between now and the weekend. Stay tuned.
